Revisiting Beauty With JJ Valaya’s Monochromes

Examine JJ Valaya’s aesthetic sensibility through this showing of the celebrated couturier’s monochrome frames

‘Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’ is probably the oldest line in the book. New Delhi’s Threshold Art Gallery presents a fresh take on the age-old verity in a series of exhibitions titled Revisiting Beauty. The opening show will give viewers a glimpse of photographs from ace fashion designer JJ Valaya’s collection of monochromes. Each one has models posing in all their regalia (with many outfits from The House of Valaya), and striking backdrops adding to the grandeur of the images.

“JJ’s photographs create a conversation between the past and the present, between the quotidian and a royal lineage. His aesthetic sensibility comes from his respect for the past,” says Tunty Chauhan, curator of the art space. “Introspection leads to the way ahead. Hopefully this exploration will lead to a questioning and contemporary understanding of beauty,” she adds.

Revisiting Beauty is on display at Threshold Art Gallery, New Delhi until October 18, 2015.
