Ram Shergill is today acknowledged to be one of the leading imagists of the directional British fashion scene, who redefined the concept of ‘Cool Britannia’. Shergill, who studied visual communications at Wolverhampton University – where he was a part of a photographic project with milliner Philip Treacy –  has carved his own niche in his domain of choice. Earlier in his career, he has worked with several fashion designers, including Alexander McQueen.

Speaking about his technique, Shergill calls himself a ‘visual sponge’. He says, “I take everything in and use it in some form when I’m doing a shoot.”

His images lure the viewer into an arresting, unsettling world of altered perceptions. Shergill’s innovative, individual technique combines skill with imagination and a painterly eye. His photographic approach can be compared to an abstract theatrical performance. It is fascinating to watch him work for whether he is taking portraits or fashion photographs, he encourages his subjects to delve into unexplored aspects of their character, and psyche.

Ram Shergill – Kaleidoscope – is organised by Tasveer in partnership with Vacheron Constantin. It will tour Tasveer’s spaces in New Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
