Kingdom of Exile: A Rabin Mondal Retrospective
Among the many renowned creative minds that West Bengal has produced is Rabin Mondal. The artist, who grew up in Calcutta (Kolkata) in the 1930s and ’40s, showcases his varied work in his latest exhibition. Kingdom of Exile: A Rabin Mondal Retrospective includes artworks of themes ranging from corruption, power and alienation to suffering and tyranny. Having lived for several years in pre-Independence Bengal, Mondal was witness to strife, illness and famine, which affected him greatly — and these feelings soon found expression in his art. Colours, line and imagery all form aspects of the artist’s forte, making his paintings distinct. Mondal, who lives in Kolkata, is known for work that is reminiscent of tribal and primitive creations.
Kingdom of Exile: A Rabin Mondal Retrospective is on display at DAG Modern, Mumbai until September 18, 2015.
