These epicureans from the culinary industry tell us their food and fashion philosophies

Edgy but aesthetically beautiful — that’s 28-year-old Karishma Sakhrani for you. “Whenever I go shopping, I’ll look for something that’s unique, something that sticks out of the whole puzzle,” she says.

The South Mumbai-bred stylesmith wears many hats and not just that of a chef’s. “I also design clothes under the label Playground, which is why you will find me all dressed up, even in a kitchen!” she says beaming.

Sakhrani, who recently designed a fresh, vegetarian menu for the Kala Ghoda-based restaurant, The Pantry, is mostly a mood dresser. So while cooking or training chefs, she likes to dress up in an oversized shirt, tights and ballet shoes; for meetings, it will be a shift dress with some unique jewellery like cuffs and the latest style of heels.

“Most of my fashion inspiration comes from my observations. I’m always reading recipes, fashion magazines and Instagram or Twitter feeds,” she says. She puts together fashion looks like she puts together recipes — in her head, while running down Marine Drive in the wee hours of the morning, or while walking down old Mumbai — two of her favourite things to do.

A quick tip from the foodie-fashionista — “Always go over the top. Leave nothing unturned. Go all out and be flamboyant,” she says.
