Dreaming Big

Text by Nasrin Modak

From running a salon in the UK to modelling, and finally Bollywood, Preeti Desai has had a whirlwind of a journey

Fascinated by “Audrey Hepburn’s iconic style” and inspired by “England’s individualistic fashion sense”, the Middlesbrough-born British Indian made history in 2006 by becoming the first non-white to ever win the title of Miss Great Britain. That was just the beginning.

Going back to her salon days in London where it all started, “I did a normal nine to five job that involved a lot of hard work but I was passionate about it. I didn’t have much of a life due to my commitment to my clients but after three years, I needed a change,” remembers Preeti.

Post her win, “acting offers kept coming from India” but Preeti played it slow, and smart. Since then, she has been “on the Kingfisher Swimsuit Special Calendar 2008, the Kingfisher ambassador to the Formula 1 world tour, and has walked the ramp for designers including Leonardo Ferragamo and Christopher Kane”. She is the new face of Provogue and has done television commercials and print ads for Cadburys, LG, Hero Honda, Citibank and Nokia.

And now, it’s Bollywood time. Her debut film Shor in the City, a thriller drama is making a lot of noise. It has got her appreciative reviews. While the news of her linkup with Abhay Deol keeps doing the rounds, Preeti’s work always takes precedence over her personal life. After long days of shooting, “I like to lounge in my PJs, eat all day, and watch movies in my apartment.” On her days off, ‘she loves going to new places, trying new food, seeing new cultures and architectures. Next, it’s Italy on my list.’
