Girl on Top
Text by Faye Remedios
Life might have changed overnight for Sourabhee after becoming the first woman to win Indian Idol but she is yet to get over the elation and shock she felt when her name was first announced. “Honestly, when they called my name, I got really confused. When I saw the picture in the frame, I was wondering if it was for the winner or runner up and my parents sitting in the audience also looked blank. When I realised, I started jumping and screaming. I still can’t believe I won,” she enthuses. The fact that she wasn’t fluent in Hindi at the start of the show made her an unlikely Idol. But Sourabhee was determined to not let the judges down even though she was the “naughtiest of the lot, played a lot of pranks and was bindas,” she laughs. And her passion for music did pay off. Now busy working on her album, she is excited about the live shows she has coming up where she will be performing with fellow contestants. “It’s going to be one huge party but there are a lot of responsibilities, too. I represent not only Tripura but all the girls of India. I have to behave and make sure I do all the right things.” Indeed.
