Capital designer

Text by Sohini Datta

Fired by music and a love for travel, Gaurav Jai Gupta, who is preparing for Autumn/Winter 2011, is on a roll this year

The young man behind the textile label Akaaro that is creating a buzz in the fashion world is Gaurav Jai Gupta, a 29- year-old designer from New Delhi. Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Textile Design from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London and a Graduate Diploma from NIFT Delhi, he has come a long way. With Acid Jazz running in the background, he is now getting ready for A/W 2011. Is it easy to remain inspired all the time? He says. “It’s tough to get inspired every six months. I follow a process for which I generally work on subjects I feel strongly about which can be personal or observations from life in general. I also work a lot around films and architecture.” While he loves to travel and listen to some Electronica and a lot of Gustavo Santolalla, when not working you will catch him at home reading up books on fashion and design or catching up with friends.

What is next in line for him? Gaurav says, “Participating in a trade show in Paris for A/W 2011, the launch of a new label Akanudeli, increasing retail presence in India and the introduction of a limited edition menswear online; so much is in store!”
