Ambika Sanjana weaves a designer organic line across two continents

Vivacious model and theatre artist Ambika Sanjana is busy designing an adult organic clothing line, B.Vika. Born in Mumbai but living in LA for the last decade, she has held on to her belief in vegetarianism and thinks deeply about the state of the planet we live in. Finding a huge demand for organic items and ethnic urban wear in America, she teamed up with best friend Valerie Mamane, a native of Morocco, to create clothes that are both organic, yet inspired by their individual cultures. They incorporate organic cotton and vanya silks, natural azo-free dyes, pigment printing and bamboo fabrics (including eco-friendly tags and packaging). Their latest Maroc Mor collection includes handcrafted women’s tops, hoodies and accessories with peacock-inspired embellishments. Already booked in four boutiques in LA for the winter line, a summer collection (think dresses, loose tunics, racer-back tops and baby-doll tees) is due to be out by the end of the year. “I used to sneak into the costume department in high school. I learnt how to sew while making costume sleeves in a Shakespearean play – by the time I graduated I was making the entire costume!” A theatre and performing arts major (with a dance minor) she was last seen on Indian stage in Raell Padamsee’s Murder on the Menu. While being passionate about design, Ambika hasn’t forgotten her first love, acting, and is also currently working on a screenplay for an international film.
