Behind the sparkle

Text by Wyanet Vaz

From the palatial homes of Napean Sea Road to the castles of Monte Carlo, Minawala’s Shehzad Zaveri, tracks the journey of his flourishing jewellery house

Shehzad Zaveri, the owner and creative director of Minawala, believes that “jewellery is truly an extension of a woman’s subtle inner-self.” Taking Indian designs to global markets, he gives us a complete rundown of what goes behind the making of a sparkle.

The journey “It all began with my mother, who, departing from traditional gold and enamel jewellery, pushed me towards diamonds. Starting with a small makeshift shop in 1982, I created a collection titled ‘Flowers in Fire’ inspired by my thoughts at the time. Working intricately with a team of two artisans, I tried to bring out the charisma of precious-semiprecious stones and diamonds, which instantly captured the imagination of my clients. Their continued patronage led to the opening of our first boutique at Heera Panna in Mumbai. In time, I realised that it wasn’t the wealth of resources, but the wealth of vision, commitment and quality that makes a mark.”

Inspiration “Nothing has been more rewarding than being able to see our creations on our clients. This has given us the encouragement to create opulent and trendsetting jewellery.”

Current jewellery trends “Designed for modern brides and working women, the ‘Contemporary Classics Collection’ gives age-old traditional techniques a modern twist. The ‘Trendsetter Collection’ is designed for women who are demanding and discerning in their choices. We have created unique pieces which are experimental and edgy. The ‘International Collection’ is designed to satisfy our globo-local clients for their versatile needs. Created for Indian women who look at jewels as an artistic investment, the ‘Value Added Collection’ has pieces that are exquisite with ethereal value.”

Upcoming projects “Our latest creations are inspired by the sounds, views and emotions of the surrounding. This means that there is romance, glamour, history, heritage and a story accompanying each and every jewel.”
