Grit And Glory: Part 3

Verve unfurls the impact of working on Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light — the Grand Prix winner at Cannes 2024 — on the personal and professional evolution of five crew members

During the making of the Hindi-, Marathi- and Malayalam-language film, five Mumbai-based crew members found themselves surrounded by a team that encouraged debate and empowered their voices — certainly not a norm in an industry known for its hierarchical power structures and lack of work-life balance. On the one hand, it widened their views on the scope of their roles and allowed them to hone their crafts, altering their approach to and helping them gain a fresh appreciation for film-making. On the other, the effects percolated down to their personal lives. For instance, it deepened their relationship with their city of residence — Mumbai — where the first half of the film about three women living and working in the maximum city was shot during the monsoon last year. And in our conversation, it became apparent that the sum of their experiences also elevated their personal perceptions of self.

In the video interview, Rutu Suthar (director’s assistant and second unit director), Prabhati Gharat (second assistant cinematographer and camera operator), Akhila Menon (associate costume designer), Piyusha Chalke (co-production designer) and Nikita Parikh (associate producer and continuity supervisor) share insights about the industry and throw light on the ground reality, providing us with a range of perspectives. In an oral history, they speak of their roles, revelations and on-set practices that added to their mental and physical wellbeing.
