Subtextual Documentalists

Text by Huzan Tata

This February, Verve gives you a quick look at the best in arts and culture

This exhibition of photographs, in association with SITE art space and The Collective Studio Baroda, presents works from the archives of Jyoti Bhatt and Manisha Gera Baswani. Bhatt is known for his black and white photographs of rural India, and Baswani has travelled the world with her images. Both artists quickly adapted to observing life through a camera lens and began to use it as a visual diary of their journeys.

Their common interest in documenting their respective contemporary surroundings, by photographing them persistently and exhaustively, offers revelations and observations that would otherwise be off limits from any recorded scrutiny.

Subtextual Documentalists will be showcased at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai from February 19 to March 7, 2015.
