View the metropolis of Kolkata through photographer Santanu Chakraborty’s lens

It is said that making a colourful world look beautiful in monochrome is a difficult thing to do. But photographer Santanu Chakraborty makes it look very easy in his black and white images of the world. His latest show, Death and Deliverance in Kolkata, comprises photos of the Bengali metropolis, each one more striking than the last.

The images from this series are black and white pursuits of a calling, which, he says, he ‘doesn’t understand’, but continues to explore and engage with as he ‘rests and reflects on an embankment by the Ganges in Kolkata’. Chakraborty plays with light, shadows and frames to present his view of life and fervour of the city. These images are sure to leave an impact on lovers of monochrome photographs and all things black and white.

Death and Deliverance in Kolkata is on display at Piramal Art Gallery, Mumbai (National Centre for the Performing Arts, NCPA Marg, Nariman Point) until April 30, 2015.
