Mumbai’s newest art gallery presents works by some of India’s master artists

Mumbai’s art district just got its latest member. Churchill Chambers, a 92-year-old heritage building in South Mumbai opened its doors to Akara Art, a new gallery space in the city. Founded by Puneet Shah, Akara Art intends to showcase the best of contemporary and modern art produced in the country. And their inaugural show, Mysteries of the Organism will do just that. The exhibition features artworks by India’s masters – from Bhupen Khakhar to Amrita Sher-Gil – who investigate the relationship between human beings and other forms, through their creations. The many drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures include formal studies, incisive portraits, explorations of the psyche, and fantasies of composite beings.

Mysteries of the Organism is on display at Akara Art, Mumbai (4/5 Churchill Chambers, 32 Mereweather Road, Colaba) until April 15, 2015
