Contemplating on Contemporary Life

Text and illustration by Wyanet Vaz

Verve illustrates the growing ‘internet paradox’ of an existence confined to our own ‘devices’ and the idea of being alone together

Our growing dependence on the internet is as strong as the need for a telephone in the early 20th century or the television in the 1960s. From finding something simple like a restaurant to something complex like a husband, we have relocated to a new virtual reality. Our lives are compressed into walls on Facebook and boards on Pinterest. Connected to people across the globe – even friends of mutual friends – it’s unnerving to field questions on reliable online identities and constant scrutinies. This illustration titled ‘The Shoebox Life’, is a reflection of our current dilemma: are we now lonelier than ever?
