For putting a system in place to safeguard the interests of children and taking the plunge into politics

Called the female Barack Obama, Kamala Harris — the first Asian-American attorney general in California — is making news for her political campaign. The daughter of a Tamil mother and a Jamaican-American father is in the running for the US Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Barbara Boxer in the 2016 election. Harris has been dogged about protecting children. As San Francisco’s DA, she had waged a battle against the evils of human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children. In 2015, Harris created the Bureau of Children’s Justice.

Home and hearth: Married to fellow attorney Douglas Emhoff in 2014, Harris said, ‘I’m something of a gourmet cook — I love to eat — and we have fun making meals. He’s my sous chef and has these goggles that he puts on when chopping onions.’

Power mantra: ‘I will be a fighter for our children who deserve world-class education, and for students burdened by predatory lenders and skyrocketing tuition. And I will fight relentlessly to protect our coast, our immigrant communities, and our seniors.’
