In his debut novel Toke, author Jugal Mody has managed to blend two controversial subjects – mythology and ‘getting high’

His book Toke is becoming the talking point for youngsters, especially with its reference to the subject of toking with a dollop of humour. First, it isn’t preachy and second, the idea of the book germinated with him wanting to write something that would make him laugh. “I always knew that toking had to be a part of my first book. I was already writing fiction when I got into the web and social media gig, so characters from an older short story of mine came crashing into this plot.”

Ask him if this is his story and he laughs and says, “I wish. I’d give anything to meet a talking crow who cons joints out of people and Vishnu stopping by for a quick joint or two some evening.”And was he comfortable with the subject of drugs in his first book? “Not at all. I don’t see a reason why I should have been. But yes Danny from Toke would like to insist: ‘Pot is not a drug!’”
