What catches your attention when you meet her is her appearance — her light eyes and features speak volumes about her lineage. Akshara Haasan is the younger child of silver-screen veterans Sarika and Kamal Haasan, whose first offering was the February release, Shamitabh. “Balki Sir, PC Sreeram Sir, Mr Bachchan and Dhanush were involved in helping me discover what kind of actor I can be,” says Akshara about her debut.
Given her DNA, it’s surprising that the 24-year-old didn’t always want to be in front of the arc lights. “I wasn’t ready earlier; I was still discovering myself,” she says. But a tryst with acting in a play six months before signing Shamitabh made her fall in love with the art.
Acting is not the only thing Akshara enjoys — dance is her passion, and “something that lets me express myself fully”. The youngster has learnt jazz, hip hop, salsa, jive, ballet, contemporary dance, Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam. She’s also penned a few movie scripts which she’d like to direct someday, although acting is her current focus. She states, “I’m open to doing anything. I feel that if I work with a variety of people I am bound to improve.”
Though she’s the youngest in her family, Akshara seems mature beyond her years — probably because she has studied in six schools, across three states. “It gave me a lot of exposure — I got to meet people from different parts of the world and understand their ways of thinking.”
For the moment, she’s waiting for reactions to Shamitabh before she signs new movies. And how would Akshara describe herself to the world? “I’m strong, love playing pranks, and I call a spade a spade. I’m very sensitive to people around me, and simple in my thinking.”
