Wedding Diaries #30: Are You Cool Enough For Shivan & Narresh’s Bridal Collection?

Text by Wyanet Vaz

From neoprene lehengas to jewelled flip flops, Shivan and Narresh decode the new-age wedding

Skip the jadau and let Shivan and Narresh jazz you up with their new ‘Destination Wedding’ collection. The designer duo, famous for their resortwear, tell us why less is definitely more, and how flip-flops have finally sneaked into the wedding wardrobe.

Who is the Shivan & Narresh bride? “A bold, confident and sophisticated bride with an evolved taste in Indian aesthetic. She understands the significance of understated luxury defined through right cut, colour and surfaces, with a minimalist approach to design.”

What’s so cool about the ‘Destination Wedding’ collection? “The ‘Destination Wedding’ line focusses on intelligent new-age materials such as neoprene for lehengas and fine Italian jerseys for pre-stitched saris. The idea is to transcend functionality to festivities at destinations.”

An alternative to traditional bridal wear… “The neoprene lehenga – it is lightweight, does not feature excessive tulle inside for volume and instead has structured godets. The embellishments are bold with motifs in crystals from Swarovski and hence, give birth to a new language of festive wear that is modern, intelligent, functional and redefines a new age of minimalism in the Indian aesthetics.”

3 wedding must-haves… “The pre-stitched sari for a pre-wedding function like a day-time mehendi, or sangeet. Neoprene lehenga for the wedding or cocktail soirée, and a pair of jewelled Havaianas for the honeymoon.”

Hot destination wedding spots are… “Monaco, Marrakech and Maldives.”

Best wedding experience… “A wedding on a yacht.”

Over-rated bridal dream… “Getting married amidst a hoard of people.”

A designer’s nightmare… “A last-minute fitting issue – you definitely wouldn’t want the bride to be shaky on her big day.”

Colours of the season are… “Yolk yellows, soft saffrons, oxblood and flesh tones.”

Bridal trends to keep in mind… “Minimalism in surface treatment and make-up, and boldness in colour and silhouette.

3 things to skip at a wedding… “Excessive draping, volumes and stress.”

Meet the designers and catch an exclusive glimpse of their collection at the multi-designer store Jhelum, Mumbai on 5 December from 11am to 8pm.
