What’s happening at Manish Malhotra’s Opening Show for LFW?

Text by Wyanet Vaz

“Every collection marks a milestone in my career.” Designer Manish Malhotra tells why this particular collection is close to his heart…

Manish Malhotra’s spring summer 2016 collection titled ‘Elements’ to be showcased at Lakme Fashion Week is inspired by nature and its elements – earth, water, wind and flame. Created for the summer bride and groom, the soft colour palette manages to offer a tactile representation of nature. The collection will be an amalgamation of modern Indian silhouettes and sharp cuts and structure.

In an exclusive interview, the master couturier talks about this new collection.

What was the point of origin for this collection?
“The dichotomy of beauty and power present in the four elements – earth, water, wind and flame, is much like the play of confidence and demureness; tradition and glamour that we see in a contemporary bride.”

What was the process behind designing the collection?
“Designing this collection has been creatively satisfying. Our rich tradition is a treasure-trove of details that can still be emulated for modern lifestyles. The collection has lot of innovation, flair and global influences.”

What are the key techniques/textiles used in this collection?
“Mixing the unexpected is what I thrive on and this season you will see it in our richly embellished gowns, lehengas with trails, breezy jumpsuits and structured tops and blouses. Layers of fabulous organza, tussar and crepe in pastel hues of baby pink, powder blue, light green and orange give the outfits a dreamy allure. Motifs of tropical flora; sharp, architectural cuts and asymmetrical detailing add a touch of edge to the collection.”

In what way has this collection added value to your profession as a designer?
Every collection marks a milestone in my career. It has been 25 years since I first started as a costume stylist and 10 years since I created the ‘ManishMalhotra’ label. Being one of the first collections as we begin a new decade, ‘Elements’ will hold a special place for me as it marks both the culmination of a journey and the beginning of a new design story for me.
