The Genius Of Souza

Text by Huzan Tata

Journey through a collection of fifty of the acclaimed artist’s works

Any talk of Indian art is probably incomplete without a mention of Francis Newton Souza. The acclaimed artist, a founding member of Bombay’s Progressive Artists’ Group (that also included stalwarts SH Raza and MF Husain), was known for his unique line drawings, and expressive energy.

The latest exhibition of his artworks presents fifty grand creations, each one a fine example of Souza’s talent. The late artist was also recently in the news for the sale of one of his artworks, Birth, at Christie’s auction in New York, for four million dollars.

Francis Newton Souza: Works on Paper is on display at Gallery 7, Mumbai (G3, Oricon House, 12/14 Rampart Row, K. Dubash Rd, Kala Ghoda) until January 11, 2016 and at Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad (KL Campus, University Road, Navrangpura) from January 22 – February 7, 2016.
