8 International Designers Who Are Inspired By India

Text by Sadaf Shaikh

They talk about Indian textiles, creative opportunities, and love for this dynamic country

7. VERA FRITSCH
Founder of textile brand Monsoon and Beyond in New Delhi

Fritsch was born in the picturesque town of Frohnleiten in Austria. She had always harboured a special love for design and interiors. She moved to India in 20o7 and decided to pursue it professionally here.

1. On Indian elements that entice her “Living here makes me feel strangely alive and challenged at the same time. You cannot take anything for granted in this country and you have to work for the daily comforts of life. Other than that, I pass ancient architectural masterpieces, smiling chaiwallahs, sleeping stray dogs and evergreen gardens on my way to work and they just make me happy.”

2. On choosing India of all places “I did not particularly choose to go to India since I did not know much about the country at that time. I just followed my lust for adventure and decided to accept a job opportunity here in 2007. In hindsight, I feel like I was destined to come here and discover my passion for craftsmanship.”

3. On challenges “The biggest one was to find the perfect production house. I had to spend a year looking for one that would produce smaller volumes while maintaining the sanctity of my designs.”

4. 3 adjectives that describe her brand “Authentic, creative and handmade.”

5. On her inspiration “Each piece that I create tells a story about the mood and beauty of India on that particular day. It could be anything from the indigo houses of Jodhpur and the faded walls of a medieval tomb in Old Delhi to a sunset over Marine Drive in Mumbai.”

6. On future plans “I am working on expanding my product portfolio and tapping new markets. I also have plans of introducing hand-stitched quilts, travel bags and a beautiful range of kids’ bedding to my collection. Retailing at exclusive stores in the U.S., Australia and Europe is also on the cards.”

7. On her favourite moment in India “I would have to pick my wedding. I decided to marry my Dutch partner in typical Indian style. It was an obvious choice for me since I really wanted my friends and family to experience the love that I have for this country and its traditions. It was truly special to have them wearing turbans and saris and dancing to Bollywood songs with me.”
