What Makes The Bulgari Serpenti A Heritage Icon

Text by Simone Louis

One of the most widely recognised motifs in the world today, Bulgari’s Serpenti is also a heritage superstar with quite a past. We trace its vibrant narrative

LUXE LIST: 5 timepieces for lovers of luxury

1. The Serpenti Incantanti

The Serpenti Incantanti — meaning enchanting snake — range gives a new lease of life to Bulgari’s iconic reptilian motif. Now, the snake wraps itself around the watch dial for the first time to create a very contemporary aesthetic. In the Serpenti Incantati Skeleton Tourbillon — a 30-piece limited edition — it frames a mechanical hand-wound, skeleton-worked tourbillon movement and doubles up as the 18-carat white-gold case set with 228 brilliant-cut diamonds and one sapphire. A blue alligator bracelet flaunts an 18-carat white-gold folding clasp set with 28 brilliant-cut diamonds.

The Serpenti Incantati High Jewellery watches, on the other hand, offer the option of having the serpent’s body wrap all the way around the wrist, a testament to the flexibility that is characteristic of the brand’s masterworks. The case and bracelet sparkle with the force of brilliant-cut and snow-set diamonds, with baguette-cut rubellites and one statement rubellite creating a striking contrast in the pink-gold models.

2. Serpenti Jewellery

Giving pride of place to colour combinations created by diamond, hued mother-of-pearl, coral, onyx and turquoise, Serpenti Jewellery displays the motif’s boundless capacity for reinvention and innovation. The vibrant timepiece’s curved 26-mm case in pink gold, set with six brilliant-cut diamonds, encases a pink mother-of-pearl or lacquered black dial, while its single-coil bracelet is set with 96 brilliant-cut diamonds and coloured stones depending on the model.

3. Serpenti Seduttori

If any watch could be called truly mesmerising, Serpenti Seduttori would be it. Vivacious emeralds are the first to catch one’s attention. Alongside 12 marquise-cut stones on the head of the serpent and 15 on the body that makes up the bracelet, two pear-shaped emeralds make for gleaming eyes that hypnotise. Pop open the mouth, however, and you’ll find an 18-carat white-gold diamond-set dial with green plated hands, skilfully adorned with the Bulgari logo.

4. Divas’ Dream Tourbillon Skeleton

Embracing Roman history as its muse, the Divas’ Dream Tourbillon Skeleton watches are exceptional pieces of fine watchmaking and intricacy. The nature-inspired dial showcases delicately handcrafted micro-painting and enamelling. The masterpiece opens to reveal a stunning skeleton-worked tourbillon movement in 18-carat pink
or white gold.

5. Diva High Jewellery

Born from the Italian jeweller’s passion for coloured stones, Diva High Jewellery is glamour incarnate. Echoing the brand’s celebrated 1960s floral brooches with spring-mounted flowers, the watch is adorned with an arch that creates a corolla of multi-coloured precious stones dancing around a gem-set bezel. Thanks to the art of en tremblant setting, each of the small stones gently quivers with the wearer’s every move.
