‘We need to work together to make this world a better place for women.’ Smriti Irani talks about her views on political and social change

From being India’s beloved bahu to becoming the youngest person in the Prime Minister’s Cabinet, Smriti Irani’s trajectory has been an interesting one. The popular actress began her political career with the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) in 2003 and, since then, has fuelled a steady flow of headlines. Despite being encircled by many a controversy, the politician has actively worked and fought for a number of causes including women’s rights, has been involved in social development programmess and runs an NGO which deals with providing solutions to water problems in villages. On the acting front, Irani continues to add to her kitty of awards. In 2014, she was presented with an award for Best TV Personality of The Decade at the Garv Indian TV Awards for her iconic role of Tulsi Virani in Kyunki…Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. This year, the Indian TV Yuva Awards saw her claiming the title of Best Youth Politician of India (Female).

ON STRUGGLE AND SUCCESS: She speaks openly about her penniless past, and feels that it is a matter of pride that she gave up her parents’ cushy life to struggle on her own.

CONTROVERSY’S CHILD: Her sense of forthrightness makes a lot of people uncomfortable. She knows the pros and cons of not being diplomatic.
