Power Moment: Arunima Sinha
At the age of 24, this national-level volleyball player lost her leg when she was pushed off a Padmavati Express train for resisting a chain-snatching attempt. Faced with a situation that many would crumble in, Arunima Sinha decided to climb Mt Everest. We applaud the Padma Shri awardee not only for her strength, but for refusing to rest on her laurels and going on to conquer the highest mountain outside Asia — which is also the highest point in both the western and the southern hemispheres.
Power of resolve: ‘Usually, amputee patients take months or even years to get accustomed to their prosthetic limbs. I walked in two days. The mind holds tremendous sway over the body.’
Way forward: ‘I have set a world record as the first female amputee to climb five of the highest mountains of the world. I will also climb the other two mountains and complete the 7 Summits Mission.’
On the royalty struggle for Farhan Akhtar’s proposed film about her story: ‘Milkha Singhji had taken one rupee as royalty for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, but the aim of my life is to serve handicapped persons and set up an academy for them. The royalty would be dedicated to them and even after me, they would be benefitting from it.’
