Best Dressed 2016: Payal Khandwala
Fashion designer, Painter; Mumbai
Wardrobe peek
Lots of shoes and old vintage saris besides the usual.
Heirloom treasures
Vintage Benarasi saris and a Benarasi lehnga which I wore for my wedding.
Newly discovered labels
I really like what Ruchika (Sachdeva) does. She has an eye for humble details and I think her work is quite sincere.
On a bad hair day
I have difficult hair and it doesn’t always follow the rules of gravity so I tame it by rolling it into a bun.
Shopping destinations
Jutta Neumann New York for handmade leather sandals.
Make-up or not
I think it depends on my mood but I do like make-up.
Absolute favourite in your closet
Drop-crotch pants.
Hollywood style icons
Tilda Swinton — very feminine and strong.
Pet peeves
Short forms in text; bad grammar, spellings and handwriting. And people who talk very slowly.
Shopping haunts
I hardly ever shop now as I make my own clothes but for old saris I love Hauz Khas and Zaveri Bazaar in Delhi, and Udaipur too is a great place to shop.
If not a designer and painter
I love the idea of being a Kathak dancer or a pianist but I’ve tried both and I’m not good at either!
Next, Aparna Badlani.
