Keen on making ‘asking for gifts’ a trend in India, Priyanka Agarwal is all set to re-define the art of buying presents

When Priyanka Agarwal’s sister got married eight years ago, the bride received a truckload of gifts, even though her invitation had carried the ‘Blessings Only’ diktat. It was then that Priyanka (who has studied at Jai Hind College, the University of Pennsylvania and worked briefly in New York) realised that there were huge gaps in the Indian gifting culture. She says, “Guests don’t know what to give…brides hate what they get. And imagine getting two baby prams or three potty trainers at a baby shower when you are pregnant with only one baby?” So, the idea of Wishberry as India’s gifting registry portal was sown by her in 2003 and launched in a beta version in July, 2010. Since its inception it has over 1000 registered users and 12,000 fans on Facebook! But she admits this is just the beginning, saying, “Indian parents are orthodox and to an extent disapprove of the ‘asking for gifts’ character of gift registries. The pioneering consumers of this concept in India are and will be students who have studied or worked abroad.” Entrepreneur by day, Priyanka unwinds the rough way: “I absolutely love to travel; personal goal is to travel to a 100 countries before I turn 60! I love the outdoors (hiking, rafting and the works), tasting wine, eating at new places.”
