The Butterfly Effect

Text by Wyanet Vaz

A string of trunk shows later, Shuchi Pandya and Komal Goel have bloomed in their own space while re-inventing their business model, and we call them our butterfly fashionistas.

“The best fashion brands are those that reflect the personalities of their founders,” believe the Pipa+Bella girls, Shuchi Pandya and Komal Goel, who are an ardent mix of boho and chic. Having grown up together as first cousins, in a family with strong roots in the diamond business, their love for jewellery is inborn.

What’s in the name “‘Pipa’ in colloquial Spanish means someone who is adventurous, and ‘Bella’ in Italian means demure and graceful.”

Inspiration “Pipa+Bella is a reflection of your own personal style and philosophy. You could wake up one morning ready to take on the world, and at other moments feel more introspective. Whoever you are, the brand helps you own your style.”

On social selling “When we started out, we were trying to solve a basic problem – we found that many Indian women take a break from their career to raise a family and find it challenging to go back into the workplace. That’s when we thought that we could combine our love for jewellery by providing them with a flexible and rewarding career opportunity.”

Harshest criticism “‘What will happen to your business when you get married or when you have children?’ (It was ironic, because our business model was trying to solve that very problem!)”

Start-up challenges “Finding the right people. Balancing work and leisure. Mistakes are expensive.”

Favourite Pipa+Bella jewellery “We love the Jasmine Necklace, Cobalt Fiesta Necklace and the Spanish Sorbet Necklace – all from our latest Spring collection!”

Favourite designers “Prada, Burberry, Celine, Mawi.”

A change post Pipa+Bella “We both sleep a lot less!”

Currently trending “Florals, vintage/art deco inspired designs; androgynous accents.”

If not Pipa+Bella “Shuchi – A scuba diving instructor or a beach bum; Komal – A child psychologist.”

Upcoming projects “A new selling strategy for our stylists, some fun brand collaborations, and potentially new product categories.”
