Perennial Power-ista: Mira Nair

Text by Mala Vaishnav

Mira Nair, the award-winning film-maker who lends her expertise to small meaningful cinema, is Verve’s global favourite

The Bhubaneshwar-born New York-based film director and producer who weaves celluloid magic from elegantly crafted original fiction, famously declined to direct one of the Harry Potter sequels because she felt that she is better suited to emotions and less interested in special effects. In between the big ticket feature film projects, the award-winning film-maker lends her expertise to small meaningful cinema like the recent 15-minute short God Room, part of a compilation feature, Words With God, produced by Mexican film-maker Guillermo Arriaga.

Success Mantra: ‘I am an independent film-maker first and foremost. I have always cut my own cloth.’

Candid Speak: ‘If we don’t tell our own stories no one else will tell them’.
