Sherina Dalamal On Her Fairytale London Wedding

Text by Zaral Shah

For self-confessed perfectionist, the finishing touches are the icing on the cake as she prepares for her upcoming nuptials

Their whirlwind romance began with a chance meeting in Dubai where sparks flew; and numerous messages, calls and transatlantic flights led to a proposal in Paris. Their adventure continues as London-born-and-raised fashion designer Sherina Dalamal gears up to tie the knot with LA-based doctor Vaneesh Soni in November this year.

Having worked in the bridal industry for over a decade, Dalamal has saved folders full of cuttings that have been waiting to come to life. As the big day edges closer, she describes her wedding journal.

Dressing For The Occasion
“Having dressed so many brides over the years, I cannot imagine wearing anything other than Cherie D. The process is very personal and a lot of thought and emotion goes into creating a wedding outfit. You are taking your first step into the next phase of your life and in the words of Harry Winston, ‘People will stare. Make it worth their while.’

I have also launched a new menswear line and designed my fiancé’s clothes…he’s even more of a perfectionist than I am! Though some elements in our wedding outfits tie them together, our clothes still have individual concepts. Both sides of the family too will be decked out in Cherie D. couture.”

The Trousseau
“I have kept it simple. I will be moving to LA and I wanted to be sensible about what I take and make. People there tend to dress down more, and their workout clothes are usually the hottest fashion statement. I surely am going to miss all the bright colours and shine we find in India!”

The Perfect Setting
“I wanted to enjoy the months of planning and the process of choosing a venue and the decor. I also wanted to get married in a place which holds sentimental value and therefore narrowed it down to London, where I grew up and where my family is based. We have two events (the sangeet and the wedding) and I have chosen intrinsic British hotels for both. The Savoy — which has one of the most exquisite ballrooms I’ve seen — and The Dorchester, where the wedding ceremony will be taking place. The latter, with its greys and whites, looks like it was furbished by Dior.”

Treat For The Taste Buds
“With the food, I’ve tried to strike a balance. As the wedding meal is set to be a sit-down dinner, I want it to have the elegance of three courses and offer a flavourful palate that is an ideal melange of East meets West.”

The Guest List
“It is personal, with all our family and close friends flying in from all parts of the world. A wedding is one of the most important moments in a person’s life and they are what makes it all come together!”
