For re-establishing the power of the classic sari

Art connoisseur; co-curator and co-founder of Akar Prakar art gallery; lover of chiffon saris; Kolkata.

Signature style
It’s all about elegance and comfort, and nothing puts me better at ease than a sari.

Label love
I tend to shop for accessories more often than clothes. Most of my jewellery is from the Amrapali store.

Passionate about
Art…those are the acquisitions that happen every month…more often than clothes and jewellery.

Daily fashion inspiration
Grace is very important; I wouldn’t go for anything loud.

Wardrobe peek
Whites, blues and yellows; I’ve lately opened up to reds as well.

Precious inheritance
My mother was into chiffons and mum-in-law into handlooms; as a result my wardrobe has the best of both worlds. For instance, I’ve inherited a Zarine Khan sari from the ’70s, from my mum-in-law. To that, I have added a real gold border which was a part of the Chanderi sari that my mom gave me, and I’ve worn it to some important art exhibitions in Europe.

Best dressed moment
At Cannes Film Festival, 2015 — though I didn’t walk the red carpet, I wore a backless black gown with a crushed bandhej sari draped as the pallu, designed by my personal stylist.

Style icon
Maharani Gayatri Devi.

A complete no-no
Off-shoulder dresses that don’t fit well.

Overrated trends
Heels, they are such torture!
