Geetu Mohandas
Director, Liar’s Dice
Creating a tasteful yet riveting production about India’s concealed scandals is never an easy task. Still, India’s entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 2015 Oscars manages to touch upon the unbecoming recruitment of construction workers — who are relocated to calamity-prone sites bereft of security standards – while cleverly serving as a road movie and survival drama. Liar’s Dice follows Kamala (Geetanjali Thapa), who is worried about her husband who has left home for a construction job in distant Delhi. For lack of any tangible information after his departure, she is determined to physically track him down. She, along with her fledgling daughter, encounters a suspicious-looking Nawazuddin (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who grudgingly agrees to help, for a price. The movie has already won the Lino Micciche Award for the Best Film at the Pesaro International film festival in Rome, the Special Jury Award at the Sofia International Film Festival in Bulgaria and the Bronce Alhambra award at Granada Cines del Sur Film Festival. Following her 2009 short, Kelkkunnundo (Are You Listening?), director Geetu Mohandas has received great acclaim with this Oscar entry, which was the unanimous choice of a 12-member jury, from at least 30 other entries including Mary Kom, Mardaani, 2 States and the Marathi film, Fandry. Come February 22, 2015, all eyes will assuredly be on the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles – banking on the perceptive cinematography, dynamic drama and poignant compositions of Liar’s Dice to bring the coveted trophy home.
