11 Malala Quotes That Are Absolute Gold

Text by Wyanet Vaz

“Just because your gender is different that does not mean that you should be treated differently”. Verve is inspired by the 18-year-old Pakistani activist…

If you haven’t already streamed Emma Watson’s interview with Malala Yousafzai, we don’t know what you’re waiting for! As part of the Into Film Festival in London, that showed He Named Me Malala, a documentary inspired by Yousafzai’s story, two of our favourite young activists came together to talk about global concerns. In this wonderfully orchestrated face-off, Emma quizzed Malala on a bunch of issues that included serious talk on feminism, gender equality, the Malala fund and even fun trivia like what would she do if she was invisible for a day and her affinity for the colour pink. Emma, who is the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, has also started the #HeForShe campaign, and in her post on Facebook, says, “Malala has the strength of her convictions coupled with the kind of determination I rarely encounter”. Malala, the 18-year-old Pakistani activist, who also won the Nobel Peace Prize last year, spoke about issues close to her heart…

Don’t miss some of the power quotes:

“Primary and secondary education should be available to every child. This is my mission and I will make it come true.” (when asked about a tangible goal the Malala fund aims to reach)

“I want this movie not just to be a movie, but a movement.”

“There is nothing wrong in calling yourself a feminist. So I am a feminist, and we all should be feminists because feminism is another word for equality.”

“People fail to understand that the word Islam means peace.”

“The very first word of the Holy Quran was iqra which means read. It wasn’t that only males should read and not females. It was about learning and reading and getting knowledge.”

“This is about the 66 million girls who can’t go to school right now. It’s about our future. It’s going to affect every one of us if so many children are out of school and don’t get education.”

“Just because your gender is different that does not mean that you should be treated differently.”

“Your gender should not create any difficulty in the choices that you make.”

“Don’t think that your age can stop you from going forward… age cannot put a limit to what you want to do.”

“Don’t think that one day I will grow up and I will do things. Don’t wait for that stage, it will be too late.”

“I think I should say that I feel really scared speaking up in school. But, in terms of meeting presidents and prime ministers, and then talking about a cause which really matters, then you have to forget about getting nervous…and the way you deliver the speech. Forget all those things and say what’s in your heart. Do not hesitate.” (when asked about how she felt about speaking publicly in front of world leaders)
