Runway Girl

Text by Nasrin Modak

The glitz, the glamour, the lights, the cameras, the clothes, the parties, the people… model, Ellen Modi revels in the lure of the ramp….

Her mother, gorgeous erstwhile model Pheroza Cooper, might have been Ellen Modi’s inspiration to enter the world of modelling, but it was also clearly her own career choice. She likes “the whole rush behind it all” and has this burning desire to “make the most of life”. No wonder then that she enjoys interacting with people and adores dogs and most living creatures. She loves spending time with Scott, her Labrador saying, “It’s a great form of relaxation.”

Ellen has modelled for James Ferreira Clothing, done a show at Lakme Fashion Week for Anand Kabra, Goa Fashion Week 2011 and a TV commercial for Epson Printers (yet to be released). Comparing the two eras of modelling, the one that her mother belonged to and the one she herself inhabits now, Ellen believes, “At that time there was a lack of professionalism but there existed a sense of camaraderie that you don’t see anymore. They were more like family. Unlike now, everything was done by the models themselves.” And yet, there is nothing that Ellen would like to amend about the industry:  “I would change myself to adapt to the rapid pace of the industry.”

During her time off, she enjoys going to the gym and baking cakes, cookies and muffins for her friends and family. Of course, they are of no good to the diet conscious Ellen. “So what if I can’t eat what I make, I like to see everyone else enjoying it.”
