Verve Wedding Diaries #20: What does it take to be a Sabyasachi Bride?

We engage in a quick banter with Sabyasachi Mukherjee who talks about bridezillas, wedding experiences, tips and tricks

The first option on a bride’s wish-list would be, without the shadow of a doubt, a Sabyasachi sari or lehenga. The bridal season’s most-popular couturier is, of course, tailoring the most dreamy dresses, but at the same time is expanding his expertise to other fields as well. From Sabyasachi’s Art Foundation, to designing wallpapers for Nilaya and connecting with real brides on Band Baajaa Bride on NDTV Good Times, the designer is taking over every aspect of the wedding space. Find out what he recommends for a bride-to-be…

3 things a bride should never wear:
1. A corseted blouse makes it difficult to sit down for a phera and it gets very uncomfortable.
2. Stilettos, because it is very tiring on your legs and hips because of the heavy lehenga.
3. Excessive can-can because when you sit down, your lehenga bounces up.

Your most memorable bridal outfitting experience… Dressing up Rani Mukherjee for her wedding because it was the smallest, intimate, and the most real-up affair that I have ever been to.

Your worst bridal outfitting experience… I think, dressing up my sister when she was getting married. She drove me up the wall because she wanted many options and ultimately chose a very simple sari.

A Bollywood actress you would love to dress on her wedding… Honestly, Rekha, if she was ever getting married again.

A designer’s nightmare would be… A customer who cannot make up her mind.

Trending colours this season are… The biggest trend of the bridal season is the return of classic red. I think there is a big Indian spirit in the market and everybody wants to be in red lehengas.

Trending bridal destinations are… Italy (Southern Italy), Turkey and South of France.

When looking for inspiration, you… My biggest source of inspiration is always travelling and looking at people around me, because since I have to design for human beings I get inspiration from other human beings.

Your idea of a modern Indian bride… A modern Indian bride is someone who believes less is more, who believes in culture, who believes in a little bit of the best, loves organic weddings and is not afraid of embracing tradition in its purest form.

3 bridal must-haves are… A traditional lehenga, a woven sari (preferably a Banarasi or a Kanchipuram, or a patan-patola), a beautiful woven shawl.

An over-rated bridal dream… Would be to look like Jodha Akbar! Every bride wants to do that. I think it is getting tiresome.
