Three Ace Designers Envision The 2021 Bride

Text by Saumya Sinha

In each interpretation, the common factor binding them together is a penchant for comfort and quirk

Varun Bahl
Dreamy couturier

“Brides have always loved floral motifs. Our take includes embroideries and embellishments and colours is our signature. Pastels are reigning supreme this season — from pistachio and duck egg blue to pale pink; softer shades are gaining more prominence in trousseaus. Bridal wear in typically taboo colours like black and white is also dominating the trend charts. These are colours we’ve championed from the very start, long before they became de rigueur. Blouses have received a major revamp in recent times with several interesting silhouettes and materials, like leotard, bikini, jacket and cape, coming to the fore. Unexpected layering in traditional wear shouldn’t be ignored either. For instance, a kurta over another, bikini tops under sheer camisole tops, and cropped blouses paired with bolero jackets are some ways in which you can sport this trend.”

The Varun Bahl bride…
“A non-conformist, she’s well-travelled and has a global outlook, but also respects tradition. She is someone who is looking for a trousseau that stays true to this aspect of her personality; hence her sartorial sensibilities are drawn to an inimitable marriage of modernity with heritage.”

Fast-forward to 2021…
“Looking at the way Indian weddings are going, I’d expect one to happen on the moon in 2021! Hence, I imagine her wearing a diaphanous gown which is floating in the air because of zero gravity, the embroidery is light too which could be raffia or nylon thread work.”

Gaurav Gupta
Edgy alchemist

“What appeals to most are our custom-made statement gowns; they are perfect for receptions and cocktails. While girls prefer conventional lehngas for the marriage ceremony, these two are occasions in which they want to be the modern-day princess bride. She turns to us for a whimsical statement piece with details that makes her stand out in the crowd. This wedding season, experiment with multilayered lehngas (a highlight of my new upcoming collection), which give a very contemporary and dramatic feel — perfect for a sangeet. Our clients choose unusual silhouettes, with a lot of fluidity and a mix of intelligent draping and construction. The current colour palette would include the newer, softer colours with options like vintage pastels.”

The Gaurav Gupta bride…
“She is someone different who loves a statement piece with standout details. She prefers statement ball gowns for the functions, in vintage colours like lavender, pastel green, a darker sky blue. Basically, she is aware of the world of fashion and likes a mix of Indian and Western garments.”

Fast-forward to 2021…
“She will not just be about Indian couture. While she will opt for the fuchsias and reds for her wedding and sangeet, she will choose darker shades for the cocktail and reception. I envision her wearing a finely embroidered, full-length couture gown with ruffles on the shoulder.”

Manish Arora
Eccentric powerhouse

“The IMA (Indian by Manish Arora) bride is quirky, fierce, independent and confident in her own skin. She is a showstopper on her big day and the centre of all attention. At IMA, our design sensibilities are quite unusual in terms of colours (that are bold and vibrant), patterns and embroidery, which have always been our signature and are greatly appreciated by all our clients. We strive to strike a balance between retaining our design ethos and seamlessly integrating it with our client’s personal preferences to create her dream ensemble.”

The Manish Arora bride…
“Atypical and extraordinary, she is someone who is uninhibited in her choices. My designs are not for the faint-hearted, I aim to create distinctive and original attire for fearless women who will do justice to my unconventional aesthetics.”

Fast-forward to 2021…
“Bold will get bolder and she will be experimental with her look and style. She will embrace experimental cuts and colours and cutting-edge embroidery techniques. Societal norms will continue to be challenged by the new-age bride.”
