The Curious Case of GucciGhost

Text by Wyanet Vaz

When an obsession turned into a cool revolution

Gucci, the Italian fashion house, once known for their dainty florals — some even inspired by Grace Kelly in the early 1960s), has courageously taken to the streets. Their recent hire is a Brooklyn- based graffiti artist, Trouble Andrew (also known as GucciGhost), who has been rehashing the double-G across bizarre objects like coffins and trash cans, even vintage TV sets.

Incorporating these crude sketches and paint daubs into the brand’s identity, Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s Fall Winter 2016 collection (available in stores from today) comes with the street artist’s version of the iconic Italian fashion house. GucciGhost first debuted on Andrew’s Instagram as a last minute Halloween costume created from a Gucci bedsheet. He cut two eye holes and placed it over his head. The madness born of this quirky imagination can be seen in his tags that read ‘Life is Gucci’ and ‘Real Gucci’. After aggressively promoting GucciGhost on Instagram, Michele eventually took note of Trouble Andrew, welcoming his appropriation into an all-encompassing revolution that is Gucci.
