ARZAN KHAMBATTA
“I wanted her to open out and fly”

FIRST REACTION ON SEEING KALKI’S IMAGE
“The posture did not permit me to recognise her as Kalki, but yet the pose was graceful, lyrical and as pretty as a porcelain masterpiece. I loved it.”

THE INSPIRATION AND THOUGHT BEHIND HIS ARTISTIC CREATION
“The head down, gave me a very introverted, shy, closed in feel. I wanted her to open out and fly, so I used the rivets on the garment as positivity emerging and radiating out of her.”

THE FUSION OF ART, FASHION AND PHOTOGRAPHY
“I have always been open to mingling all the arts together. Whether it is sculpture or painting or dancing or music or poetry, all the arts mix so beautifully together – they have to only be orchestrated properly! I would further add that how interesting it would be if there would be a programme where artists would exchange their crafts under the guidance of the masters. Like a sculptor would compose music, a poet would paint, a painter would dance and so forth.”

One of India’s most prolific sculptors, Arzan Khambatta is a professional architect with 12 solo shows and hundreds of group shows to his credit with art works  ranging from six inches to 40 feet. He also solves large jigsaw puzzles, teaches art to children, cycles all over the city, practises Iyengar yoga, and makes short funny films.

“Watch the behind-the-scenes shoot of the making of these fabulous canvases here.”

“And read about Kalki’s views on art and cinema in the exploratory cover story here.”
