Tina Tahiliani Parikh takes Verve on a tour of the new Ensemble…

Last evening saw the relaunch of Ensemble, the country’s oldest multi-designer store at Kala Ghoda, Mumbai. Launched in 1987, the  store was the first of its kind to house eminent designers like Tarun Tahiliani, Rohit Khosla, Neil Bieff, Amaya and Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla under one roof when standalone emporiums were the norm. With its pioneering vision to showcase Indian design and craftsmanship, Ensemble’s roster grew to accommodate an impressive bevy of prolific names like Rohit Bal, Manish Malhotra, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Sabyasachi, Pankaj & Nidhi and Anushree Reddy amongst others.

Before she opened the door to the world, Tina Tahiliani Parikh took us on a tour of the new store…

Tina Tahiliani Parikh on her inspirations and the creative process behind the new Ensemble – “Revamping the store has been a huge learning experience for me. I worked with architects Bijoy Jain, Krupa Patel and Vinod Narkar and they urged me to look at things very differently. As you can see, our bridal-wear is hanging on bamboo racks and the staircase is something you’d see in a dhaba. They kept sending me references of everyday things that can be made relevant to the luxury space. It was a tussle back and forth, but I have really come to appreciate India and its workmanship in a whole new light.”

Tarun Tahiliani on his favourite space in the store – “I’ve always loved the big industrial space with the mezzanine. It belonged to the building (which is apparently the oldest in Mumbai), and those were the original gables on the top. I like the shape of the these rooms; it’s where we started and I will always have an attachment to it.”

The store’s new avatar includes the debut of Anamika Khanna’s new line for men as well as an exclusive Cruise collection by Monisha Jaising. It will also host new sections of bridal-wear, contemporary Indian luxe, accessories and menswear, alongside dedicated spaces for designers Anamika Khanna and Tarun Tahiliani. Keeping in line with the newfound proclivity for artisanal works, there is also a special focus on a curated selection of fabrics, handlooms and weaves.
