Dior Diary: The Sweetest Spring

Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet tells the story of an iconic dress, and a scent that smells like love

Make me a fragrance, that smells like love!” and Miss Dior was created.

Christian Dior’s silhouettes are an ode to femininity, with slender waists and skirts that bloom like corollas. The master couturier was of the belief that after women, flowers were the most divine. To give women a spring in their step, he decided to create a perfume in the image of his dresses.

And so, in 1947, Miss Dior was born, an ebullient, cajoling fragrance in which jasmine from Provence joined with sensual mosses and green notes of galbanum. The connections between couture and perfume had Christian Dior design a dress to be named after his most dear fragrance (for the simple reason that it smelled of the most endearing of emotions). The Miss Dior dress bloomed like the sweetest spring, with a bustier top, signature nipped waist and fully embroidered with soft-hued flowers.

Dior’s newest campaign has Raf Simons orchestrate this divine blend of fashion and fragrance. Skilfully crafted as the first, the modern version is embroidered with a thousand petals as it masterfully depicts the original Miss Dior dress. Natalie Portman evokes the grace of a young woman as she makes her way across boudoir staircases and dwells in the old world charm. In her hands, daintily clutched is Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet, a reinterpretation of the iconic perfume as the harmony of flowers waft across the room.

Washed in the lightest shades of pink, Blooming Bouquet metaphorically announces the first days of spring. After all, as Christian Dior rightly remarked, “Every woman should have something pink in her wardrobe. It is the colour of happiness.”

In an exclusive tête-à-tête with Francois Demachy – the nose of Dior, Verve explores the iconic perfume’s light-hearted charm

Can you say that Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet is defined by its floral nature?
Yes, the idea of a floral bouquet is central to this composition: a balanced bouquet, an elegant caress. Sicilian mandarin essence and rose essence revolve around a peony accord that is particularly charming. A white musk base brings a cushion of velvet notes. Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet hooks you in without being invasive or overwhelming.

What is special about the Peony accord?
The peony is a very fragile flower that has never let itself be harnessed. It is still not possible to extract an essence from it today. The peony accord is therefore a pure creation, a composition in which rose and fruity notes of apricot and peach come together to evoke this flower.

How would you describe the Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet woman ?
She has the extreme elegance of sweetness. A subtle aura, a delicate seduction that is not at all aggressive. I don’t see her as having an overriding physical characteristic. She has a certain effervescence and a light-hearted charm.
