Chanel No 5 L’Eau: Turning Up The Heat!

Text by Wyanet Vaz

This promising new interpretation of the iconic fragrance is bold yet beautiful

In her book The Secret of Chanel No. 5, best-selling author Tilar Mazzeo grapples with the idea that every minute of every day, someone buys a bottle of Chanel No. 5. First concocted by perfumer Ernest Beaux in 1921, the jasmine and Mayrose-infused fragrance was contemporary and uncluttered, just like Mademoiselle Chanel’s preferred wardrobe. But when one of the world’s oldest and beloved fragrance underwent a serious incarnation in Beaux’ No. 5 Eau de Toilette, and later in perfumer Jacques Polges’ No 5 Eau de Parfum and No. 5 Eau Première, it only added a stronger dimension to Chanel’s idea of an evolving woman.

This year, Polges’ son and successor, Olivier Polge, adds a contemporary spin to the classic fragrance with No 5 L’Eau — a fresh composition of  jasmine, ylang-ylang and rose. Evanescent notes of citrus aldehyde help freshen up the experience, while woody notes of cedar and vetiver unveil a deeper, sensuous vibe. Based on this paradox, the advertising campaign features model Lily-Rose Depp representing the spirit of today’s women – extravagant yet elegant, vulnerable yet invincible.
