A Starry Experience

Text by Sitanshi Talati-Parikh

Named after the constellation, Auriga Spa in Singapore taps into celestial rhythms to provide a sensory experience

There is nothing that spells massage more than hours spent in zoos, parks, malls and streets entertaining an enthusiastic preschooler. And yet, when the good folks at the uber-luxe Capella Singapore on Sentosa Island suggested making my way to their award-winning Auriga Spa nearly an hour before my scheduled massage, I was perturbed. What in the world would I do in the spa for so long, ‘enjoying the facilities’ as they mysteriously remarked? My curiosity peaked; but I made my way to the spa with just 20 minutes to spare.

Auriga Spa taps into celestial rhythms by offering a new wellness philosophy based on the phases of the moon. Signature treatments use natural organic products to reflect the varying energies of the lunar cycle. I didn’t know a thing about it, though, while I embarked on my journey.

I wandered through the narrow, dark-stone corridors past chambers that are for changing, preening, washing up and more. Until I arrived at the subterranean cave of pleasure. An herbal steam bath that is flanked with an ice fountain: with ice chips to tease your senses when experiencing the steam bath. After cooling and heating up my skin in intervals, I moved to a vitality pool, lying back with soft bubbles tickling my spine, before getting plummeted by the optional strong force of the back jet. I lingered and then regretfully noting the ticking clock, popped into one of the two experience showers – peppermint cool mist (divine but disconcertingly other-worldly) and berry-fragranced tropical rain shower with side jets (very chic Amazon-like). It took me a few tries, heading from one to the other, trying to figure out which was my thing, and made my way to the relaxation room with Sound Wave lounge chairs. And because I didn’t heed their advice and go in earlier, I was immediately accosted with the pleasant-faced masseuse, who took me to one of the nine experience rooms.

Rae, my masseuse, appeared well versed with the details in my chart – I had earlier marked the areas on a schematic with specifics as to what the masseuse should concentrate on or avoid. She worked a wonderful massage in, living up to the hype.

After, in a relaxed stupor, I was escorted to a lounge, where herbal tea and refreshments (in the form of dry fruits) awaited. As I sat back, I could only contemplate how soon I could return to experience this pleasure chamber again.
