Verve Wedding Diaries #36: 3 Must-Have Designers For Your Trousseau

Text by Saumya Sinha

Three hot young designers who are gaining momentum on the wedding wear market talk about what’s brewing in their creative cauldrons

Sonaakshi Raaj
The young designer shot to fame with her take on fusion wear, keeping intact the timeless appeal of her garments. Raaj is known for combining distinctively feminine and sensual silhouettes with subtle traditional embroidery. Since her design debut in 2012, she has been designing bridal wear with a striking fusion appeal.

Pioneer in…“Sari-gowns for the New Age woman.”

Claim to fame…“When the sari-gowns designed by me were donned by Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone on promotional movie tours — they became instant hits — the brand swiftly started gaining global praise and recognition.”

Star Value…“In addition to Sonam and Deepika, Bipasha Basu, Malaika Arora Khan and Katrina Kaif are some of the names in the growing list of celebrities who have taken a liking towards my designs.”

Techniques mastered…“Sheer play coupled with delicate embroidery; contemporary drapery and cuts combined with traditional craftsmanship set the label apart.”

Hot trends for brides-to-be… “Heavy, blingy wedding wear is passé. Swap intricate zardozi work with lighter embroidery on gossamer fabrics.”

Sahil Kochhar
Having worked with Rohit Bal, the king of bridal couture, Sahil Kochhar’s designs promise technical strength along with modern grandeur. From wedding wear to cocktail dressing, his handcrafted creations have become all the rage today.

Claim to fame… “My first show in 2014.”

Signature style…“Making Indian craft look really modern.”

Technique mastered… “Handcrafting.”

Hot bridal trend…“Keeping away from zardozi.”

Haute tip… “Don’t overdo it. Mix it smartly.”

Learning from Rohit Bal… “The best experience I have ever had in my life. Probably the greatest mentor and friend, he was never like a boss but always like family and remains my biggest inspiration.”

Sanjay Garg
His design philosophy urges one to move from being fashion-conscious to cautious. Breathing life into overlooked techniques is a quality synonymous with his label and it’s only fair to agree that you can spot a ‘Sanjay Garg bride’ from afar.

Signature style…“Colour…culture…contemporary…. We want to give a new meaning to the unexplored Indian heritage. In the past 70 years, no designer/brand in India has worked only with handlooms. Not everything has to be bling.”

What inspires you… “History.”

Achievement… “A younger audience has started wearing handloom saris designed by me.”

Techniques mastered… “Chanderi, mashru and kadwa brocade from Varanasi, and currently Jamdani from Bengal; we have worked on textiles that have been completely ignored for a long time.”

Today’s bride… “Is practical and seeks individuality. She is looking for a change that captures the essence of her own culture and personality.”

The hottest trend… “I don’t believe in them.”

Upcoming projects… “The launch of a line of Garhwali saris that we have recently started working on.”

Challenges…“Demand outnumbers production.”
