12 International Fashion Trends For A Wardrobe Upgrade

Text by Sadaf Shaikh

We’ve spent the past month scouring the collections from New York, London, Milan and Paris to bring you the best in style

Jump on the jacket ‘band’wagon

These bad boys have been inspired by staid band/cavalry jackets but their couture renditions are painfully cool. Wear it with skinny leather jeans like Gigi Hadid for a quick flip to the dark side.

The Edwardian collar

  • fashion, trends, fashion week, edwardian collar,
L to R: Andrew GN, Gucci and DKNY
  • fashion, trends, international fashion, edwardian collar,
L to R: Erdem, Toga and Ellery

Of the very many gifts from the Victorian era, the Edwardian collar takes the cake. They can transform a regular shirt to elegant evening wear and endow you with all the wisdom of past years. Maybe not, but we guarantee you’ll look the part.

The tassel tale

  • tassels, international, fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Ralph Lauren, Elie Saab and Givenchy
  • tassels, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Elisabetta Franchi, Roberto Cavalli and Trussardi

The king of rock’n’roll would’ve been delighted to see tassels and fringes make a proud comeback all these years later. Besides lending an easygoing vibe to your ensemble, it’s also a great way to remind your friends that you’re always down for a fun evening.

The superhero cape

  • capes, international fashion, fashion, trends,
L to R: Elie Saab, Chanel, Balmain and Versace
  • capes, international fashion, fashion, trends,
L to R: Temperley London, Emilio Pucci, Marc Jacobs and Nina Ricci

We’ve finally realised that we have to be our own superheroes; a cape is the first step in that direction after all. Billowing capes are a great appendage to almost anything you’re wearing whether it’s a shirt, a dress or a skirt. We’re predicting that these are going to be replacing the mundane trench coat for quite some time.

Sheer madness

  • sheer, fashion, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Dior, Elie Saab and Giambattista Valli
  • sheer, fashion, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Peter Pilotto, Oscar de la Renta and Alexander McQueen

This one was a tough cookie to crack, but we had to because sheer is the most ethereal fabric in the universe. Most runways showcase extremely risque interpretations of sheer that we can’t even imagine taking to the streets in India. However, it could turn out to be quite the dream combination if worn with shorts and a bustier or a bodycon dress.

The gypsy queens

  • bohemian dresses, gypsy, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Marchesa, Roberto Cavalli and Alexander McQueen
  • bohemian dresses, gypsy, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Temperley London, Etro and Missoni

Bohemian accents draw out the free spirit in us and perhaps this is why they’re favourites with creative directors of all major fashion houses. Pair it with a tastefully embroidered jacket for best results.

Miss bossy pants

  • high waist pants, international fashion, fashion week, trends, fashion,
L to R: Ellery, Isabel Marant, Kenzo and Nina Ricci
  • high waist pants, international fashion, fashion week, trends, fashion,
L to R: Bottega Veneta, Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace and Anna Sui

We knew those invincible low-waist jeans were going to find a worthy opponent someday. Besides being exceptionally comfortable, high-waist jeans are also super flattering. Wear your pair with a crisp white shirt and a smart trench coat to look your crisp best.

Something up your sleeve

  • sleeves, fashion, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Giambattista Valli, Haider Ackermann, Kenzo and Loewe
  • sleeves, fashion, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Delpozzo and Alexander McQueen

‘Too big’ isn’t a complaint anymore, when we speak of sleeves. We’ve seen all kinds of bizarre but endearing patterns this season and we’re ready to experiment. Moreover, silhouettes are always a great element to play with when you like to stick to a certain colour palette and you know you have those inexplicable ‘all black’ days all too often.

All work and more play

  • workwear, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Balenciaga, Chloe,Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu
  • workwear, international fashion, fashion week, trends,
L to R: Paul Smith, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo and Versace

Work-wear just got a whole new meaning. From pantsuits with slogan tees to  monotone blazers paired with coral bermudas, the runway equipped us with a bunch of ideas that look like promising workplace winners.

The terribly tiny tote

  • tiny bags, international fashion, fashion week, fashion, trends,
L to R: Dolce & Gabbana, Coach, Givenchy and Valentino
  • tiny bags, international fashion, fashion week, fashion, trends,
L to R: Burberry, Christopher Kane, Mulberry and Versace

Utilitarian bags are passé. Leaving your house with a bag that could possibly fit your whole wardrobe into it isn’t cool anymore. Opt for a micro clutch in the shape of a popular cartoon character for brownie points.

The ‘not so’ cold shoulder

While the cold shoulder and off shoulder trend are ruling fashion boards right now, we are delighted to see the one-shoulder style being resuscitated quietly. It’s chic, leaves much to the imagination and allows you to show off all that time you’ve been spending at the gym (or typing away furiously at the keyboard).

Colour me pink and yellow

Sunflower yellow and bubblegum pink were the chosen hues for spring-summer. And we can imagine why after looking at some of the models from Salvatore Ferragamo and Valentino.
