Though they may be from a particular school of art, each artist, over time, creates his own language. In a new exhibition, New Delhi’s KNMA presents a first-ever retrospective of late modern artist Jeram Patel’s works. Titled The dark loam: between memory and membrane, the show takes a look at the creator’s abstract artworks, many of which he made using a relatively-new tool for his time, the blowtorch. Working with varied media including enamel paint, zinc white, sand and fevicol, Patel layered surfaces to create ‘the dark loam’ – a metaphor for the mysterious void or the dark bare soil of his art. As curator Roobina Karode says, ‘With no apparent connection with the outside world, these forms enter the primeval zone, capturing the ghostly apparitions that haunt Jeram’s active imagination, and penetrate his psyche. This exhibition explores the ‘probing of his spade into the dark loam’.
The dark loam: between memory and membrane is on display at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (145, South Court Mall, Saket) until December 20, 2016
