Real Imaginations

Text by Huzan Tata

Introspect the fragility of images with Susanta Mandal’s latest show

Have you ever wondered why people remember some things and forget some? Why our memories choose to preserve certain images and discard the rest? Kolkata-born artist Susanta Mandal tries to uncover this ‘fragility of images’ through his latest solo show, Hard Copy.

Using light, shadows, movement and stillness, the artist’s kinetic installation attempts to present his understanding of duration, space, perception and reality. Along with the sculptural installations, the show also has on display a series of unusual drawings developed from prints of various computerised tests of the human eye.

5 Questions with the artist, Susanta Mandal

  1. Artistic Motivations “It’s a peculiar sort of madness, and visual art is such a medium with which you can express something not possible in any other medium.”
  2. Inspirations “My surroundings and their mystery.”
  3. On the wall at home “Marcel Duchamp”
  4. Concerns that find a place in your art “Everything is changing drastically…in our times we are sucking resources so rapidly; what will be next?”
  5. If not an artist, you would be….“Of course, a gardener.”

Hard Copy is on display at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi (D 53, Defence Colony) until May 18, 2015.
