Using his art as a voice against political issues, Sri-Lankan artist Muhanned Cader illustrates the changing face of his South Asian country in Island, his first solo show in India. Featuring his recent drawings, paintings and collages that will each make you ponder long after a viewing, the exhibition brings forth the issues plaguing the once-idyllic land. As the press note for the show says, ‘Balancing between what is and what is not, the past and the present, Muhanned remains committed to a critical excavation of the neo-colonial agendas afflicting his home country.’

5 Questions with the artist, Muhanned Cader

1. Artistic Motivations “Deep boredom, and not knowing anything else to do.”
2. Inspirations “The sea, and river, land and looking at the night sky, paintings and drawings, art house cinema and music from Jazz to Classical. I am also inspired by the Chicago Imagists movement.”
3. On the wall at home “Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night”
4. Concerns that find a place in your art “Environmental issues and bad politics.”
5. If not an artist, you would you be…“Farmer or environmentalist.”

Island is on display at Talwar Gallery, New Delhi (C-84, Neeti Bagh) until December 30, 2016
