Cloud-spotting With Prabhakar Pachpute

Born in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, artist Prabhakar Pachpute is most known for his brilliant charcoal drawings and sculptural forms. In his latest show in Mumbai, the artist – represented by Kolkata’s Experimenter gallery – uses the space and walls of the NGMA premises for his creation that combines wall drawings, sculptural interventions and light effects. no, it wasn’t the locust cloud as the exhibition is named, examines mining labour and its effects on the landscape – a subject close to the artist’s heart.
5 Questions with the artist, Prabhakar Pachpute
- Artistic Motivations: “My travels abroad have helped me understand varied mining methods, which continue to push my practice. Over the last few years, I have studied displacements in different cultures, landscapes and languages. It is this ongoing research which motivates me to create art.”
- Inspirations: “I have always been inspired by my surroundings and people. I like to observe their stories or activities, and connect my own experience with theirs. I also find inspiration in Marathi literature, which often helps me formulate my ideas and thus influences my practice.”
- On the wall at home: “Pieter Bruegel, Francis Alys and Chittaprosad Bhattacharya.”
- Concerns that find a place in your art: “The exploitation of land and people, as a result of gentrification.”
- If not an artist, you would be… “a driver or a farmer.”
