Breakn’ A Sweat In India: The Skrillex Scoop

Text by Simone Louis

A day ahead of his Mumbai gig, the king of dance music chats with us about his personal playlist, Honey Singh, Bollywood and food

It’s an exciting time to be a music artist touring India. What drew you to finally come here?
You know what? That’s a really good question. The world is so big; the best answer I can really give is that we plan so far ahead. I feel like now is the right time for us to be here. The sort of infrastructure to do our type of show wasn’t ready before, but it’s good now. So to all my fans – get ready for Vh1 Supersonic in your city.

This being your first visit, what are you most excited about?
I watch Bollywood movies all the time on airplanes! I love Bollywood, so I’m excited to take some back with me and put it into my DNA.

So does everything you currently know about the country come from that?
Well, I’ve heard a few stories too; a lot of different things actually. My friends have gone to India and have said it’s a spiritual place with a lot of different sensory experiences that you wouldn’t get anywhere else in the world. Also I know some of the Major Lazer guys got sick because they didn’t eat the right things, but I think that’s all part of the experience. So I’m kind of ready for everything – the people, culture and food.

Anything special you’re planning to play here?
I’m always a very spur-of-the-moment type of guy, so I’m sure I’m going to be getting influenced by the surrounding sounds and traditions. That will come out musically, but I don’t know how…we’ll have to wait and see!

What’s it like producing new music while you’re on the road doing more than 300 shows a year?
Another nice one. I feel like with music you’re basically a voice for a culture that you’re experiencing at the time. I am a product of my environment and of where I put myself. So me travelling all the time, hearing different things and producing on the go – that’s why I make the music I make now.

You’ve always had interesting collaborations. Is there anything in particular that you look for in an artist before working with them?
I don’t really have a wish list; I get just as excited about working with people who are unknown as much as I do with established artists. I think the most exciting things have always happened in a whimsical, unplanned moment where all of a sudden sh** just happens. You know who I want to work with, for real? Yo Yo Honey Singh. Shout out, bro.
