Evolution of Indian Art #2: Patachitra
Patachitra
Based in Odisha and West Bengal, this art style literally means ‘pictures on cloth’.
Then
Painters brought to life tales of folklore and scenes from Hindu epics. Bright reds, yellows and oranges dominated, and Radha and Krishna, Ganesha and mythological creatures formed a part of patachitras. The artists, known as patuas, would sing to audiences as they unfurled the artworks.
Now
Patachitra in modern times is created on digital media to acquaint people with modern history and events.
