Evolution Of Indian Art #1: Miniature Paintings

Text by Huzan Tata

Travel through time to trace India’s penchant for visual storytelling

Miniature paintings
Though miniatures were created from Byzantine times, they were brought to India from Persia by the Mughals, and involve painting on small pieces of paper using natural colours.

Then
Unless you never paid attention during history lessons, you’d know that Mughals were famous for their patronage of the arts, and their megalomania. They made sure that their portraits, court scenes, hunting escapades, stories from the Baburnama and Akbarnama, and even Indian epics were grandly portrayed by miniature painters. This style spread to other Mughal states in India, leading to centuries of intricate art.

Now
Cell phone and cushion covers, mugs and even T-shirts — you name it, and it’ll have a print of a miniature painting on it. And if you’re Internet savvy, you’ve probably seen them used in graphic strips and stories.
